What makes an airline the “best” in the world?
When people compare airlines, they often see ratings and awards and assume they all mean the same thing. But that is not really the case.
Skytrax and AirlineRatings.com use different approaches to determine which airlines rank among the world’s best, and the newest 2026 results show why travelers should look beyond a single award or score.
Qatar Airways is a particularly interesting example. The airline continues to rank highly across multiple organizations, recently taking the top spot in AirlineRatings.com’s 2026 full-service airline rankings while its Qsuite also received separate recognition from passengers.
So, what do all of these rankings actually mean?
Skytrax Ratings vs. Customer Ratings
Skytrax is best known for its 1-Star to 5-Star Airline Rating system. However, these stars are not simply based on customers leaving reviews.
Skytrax says its ratings come from detailed audits of an airline’s products and services, including the onboard experience, airport services and staff service. The goal is to use the same standards when comparing airlines around the world.
Skytrax also runs the World Airline Awards, which are different from its Star Ratings. These awards are based on the opinions of travelers through a large global passenger survey. That is why Skytrax describes the awards as the “Passenger’s Choice Awards.”
So, in simple terms, Skytrax has two different ideas: professional airline ratings and passenger-voted awards.
How does Flyer’s Choice Awards compare?
AirlineRatings.com also gives airlines awards, but its system is not exactly the same as Skytrax’s.
One important distinction is its Flyers’ Choice Awards, which are based entirely on passenger votes rather than the assessments of AirlineRatings’ editorial team.
The 2026 results were announced in August and covered everything from favorite airlines by region to cabin classes, crew service and the airlines passengers trust most.
Which Airlines Did Travelers Prefer in 2026?
For Preferred Business Class, passengers ranked:
- Qatar Airways
- Emirates
- Singapore Airlines
Qatar’s win centers around its Qsuite, which continues to resonate with travelers despite first entering service in 2017. The cabin is known for its sliding privacy doors, lie-flat seats, direct aisle access and adaptable seating configurations.
For Preferred Premium Economy, travelers selected:
- Emirates
- Singapore Airlines
- Air New Zealand
And for Best Cabin Crew, the top three were:
- Singapore Airlines
- Emirates
- Etihad Airways
Singapore Airlines was actually the most decorated airline across the entire 2026 Flyers’ Choice Awards, winning four categories including Preferred Economy, Best Cabin Crew and the airline that gave passengers the greatest “Peace of Mind.”
Regional preferences also revealed which airlines travelers favored closer to home.
In the United States and Canada, passengers ranked Delta Air Lines first, United Airlines second and American Airlines third.
In the Middle East and Africa, Emirates took the top position, followed by Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways.
These rankings provide a slightly different perspective than an expert-selected “World’s Best Airline” list. Instead of asking which airline performs best according to a set of industry criteria, the Flyers’ Choice Awards ask a simpler question: Which airlines did passengers actually prefer flying?
Why Qatar’s Business Class Win Stands Out
Qatar Airways has consistently received recognition for its premium cabins, but its 2026 Flyers’ Choice win is particularly notable because Qsuite is no longer a new product.
It entered service in June 2017, yet travelers still selected it over newer business class offerings from competing airlines.
AirlineRatings notes that Qsuite can be found across Qatar’s A350-1000 fleet and Boeing 787-9 aircraft, as well as selected Boeing 777 and A350-900 aircraft. That distinction matters because not every Qatar Airways business class flight offers exactly the same cabin.
This is where rankings become especially useful for premium travelers, but also where they can become misleading if taken at face value.
Why does this matter?
For passengers, ratings can be useful, but they should not be the only factor considered when choosing a flight.
An award for “Preferred Business Class” does not automatically mean every business class seat across that airline’s fleet offers the award-winning product.
An airline may operate several different aircraft types and multiple generations of premium cabins. Qatar Airways, for example, is famous for Qsuite, but not every Qatar Airways business class flight is operated with a Qsuite-equipped aircraft.
That means travelers should look beyond the airline’s overall ranking and consider the aircraft, seat configuration, route and specific cabin product operating their flight.
In the end, airline ratings are best viewed as a guide rather than a final answer.
Skytrax, AirlineRatings and passenger reviews can all tell travelers something different. Looking at them together provides a much clearer picture of what an airline offers.
