Emirates Tightens Safety Rules on Power Banks: What You Need to Know

Emirates has announced a more restrictive approach for the use of power banks aboard its flights. Beginning October 1, 2025 – you’ll still be allowed to bring one power bank on board, but you will no longer be able to use or charge it during flight.

Emirates says it conducted a comprehensive safety review and saw a growing number of lithium-battery–related incidents aboard various airlines.

The worry is thermal runaway, a chain reaction where overheating in a battery becomes self-sustaining, potentially leading to fire, explosion, or toxic gas release. Basic power banks, especially ones without advanced safety circuitry, may pose elevated risk in such scenarios.

By banning usage mid-flight and requiring the device to remain easily accessible in the cabin, Emirates aims to reduce risk and ensure cabin crew can respond quickly if an incident occurs.

Here are the new rules you’ll want to keep in mind if flying on Emirates:

  • You may carry one power bank with a capacity of up to 100 Wh.
  • It must remain in cabin baggage (i.e. not checked luggage).
  • You can’t use it to charge other devices during the flight, nor can you charge the power bank itself using the aircraft’s power supply.
  • Storage constraints: not in overhead bins. You must place it either in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you.
  • The power bank must clearly show its capacity rating.

Tips for Travelers:

  • Before flying, fully charge your devices (phone, tablet, laptop) so you don’t rely on a power bank mid-flight.
  • Bring along a charging cord compatible with any in-flight USB/plug ports, where available.
  • Check the capacity rating on your power bank prior to your flight to avoid surprises.
  • Keep the power bank in your carry-on, in the seat pocket or under your seat during the flight.
  • Stay up-to-date with the news: other airlines may follow in Emirates’ footsteps and begin tightening their rules as well.
